Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at finding out the correlation between students’ reading comprehension competence and grammar mastery with respect to tenses and pronouns. There are three stages in conducting this research. The first is gathering, selecting and classifying data. Spreading questionnaire and conducting test are used to gather factors that influence students’ learning outcomes and students’ ability in reading comprehension, tenses and pronouns mastery. The population in this study is the students of Kurnia Excellent Course, Demak in the Academic Year of the 2010/2011. The second stage is to analyze data using product moment correlation test to know the correlation between grammar mastery consisting of tenses and pronouns with reading comprehension. Meanwhile, multiple linier regression is used to know the correlation between tenses and pronouns mastery simultaneously with reading comprehension competence. The third is to present the results. The results show that tenses mastery significantly correlate with reading comprehension (r = 0.919), the correlation between pronouns mastery and reading comprehension is significant too (r = 0.899). Multiple regression analysis obtain p-value less than 5%, so there is significant correlation between tenses and pronouns mastery with reading comprehension. Most of the students at Kurnia Excellent Course, Demak in the Academic Year of the 2010/2011 have mastered pronouns, tenses and reading comprehension. The tenses and pronouns mastery as the part of grammar mastery influence the reading comprehension significantly. The more the students master the tenses and pronouns, the better students in reading comprehension
