Abstract

Background Development is multifactorial. Development resulted from interaction among central nervous system and the innervated organs. The first three years of life was golden period for brain maturity which influenced by sleep. Aim To analyze association between sleep disturbance and the development of children under the age of three. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted in posyandus of public health centers in 5 districts in Semarang during April-May 2015. Cluster sampling method was used. Subject’s parents/attendances were interviewed to fill Indonesian Prescreening Developmental Questionnaire, Kuesioner Pra-Skrining Perkembangan (KPSP) and Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ). Chi-square test was used for obtaining bivariate analysis. Results There were 66 subjects (29 subjects were boys, and 37 subjects were girls) enrolled in this study. Thirteen (19,7%) subjects was suspected for developmental delay and 21 (31,8%) subjects experienced sleep disturbance. The proportion of subject suspected for developmental delay in sleep disturbance group (23,8%) was bigger than the one in normal sleep group (17,8%). There was no significant association between sleep disturbance and each developmental sectors i.e. gross motoric (p=0,866), fine motoric (p=0,216), language (p=0,901), and personal social (p=0,575), and general development (p=0,566). Conclusion Sleep disturbance was not associated significantly to development of children under the age of three. Keywords: development, children under the age of three, sleep disturbance
