Abstract

Background: Batik making process especially “mencanting”, is done in sitting position. If this sitting positionmaintained for a long period, it can cause muscle strain which may lead into musculoskeletal disorders. Objectives:To determine the association between batik making processand musculoskeletal disorders in batik artisans. Method:An observational study with cross sectional design was conducted in UKM Batik Kanfer Banyumanik and Kampung Batik Semarang 16. Subjects in this research were batik artisans who use “canting” during their work (n=26). Working position was assessed using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) while musculoskeletal disorders was assessed by interview based on Nordic Body Map questionnaire. Hypothesis test used was Pearson chi square test. Result:The association between working position and category of musculoskeletal disorders was found to be significant (p=0,008). On the other hand, the association between working period and musculoskeletal disorders was insignificant (p=0,354). Batik artisans with more than two years of working period had increased risk of having musculoskeletal disorders by 1,22 times. Conclusion:The inappropriate working position found in batik artisans may cause musculoskeletal disorders. However, the long period of work does not always cause musculoskeletal disorders. Keywords: batik making process, RULA, Nordic Body Map, musculoskeletal disorders
