Abstract

The popularity of the Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant contest indicates that the contestants are displayed and promoted through the competition that reproduces the dominant group's ideology. Contestants become effective tools/objects to gain ratings. The contest's popularity makes the audience's reception important to interpreting sexual objectification in the Puteri Indonesia 2020 program. Based on the problem, this study aims to determine the audiences' reception towards the sexual objectification of contestants in the Puteri Indonesia 2020 program. This study's data analysis technique is reception analysis by Stuart Hall and semiotic analysis by Fiske as the initial steps for finding preferred reading. The meaning system determined based on preferred reading categorized into 3 aspects: a standpoint of the dominant group, the dominant group's interests, and situated knowledge. There are 10 preferred readings based on text analysis related to (1) the feminine appearance of Puteri Indonesia, (2) body use in dance sessions, (3) opportunities and appearance of Aceh finalists, (4) catwalk skills, (5) assessment of knowledge in Q&A session, (6) quarantine training, (7) Puteri Indonesia as promotion tools of Mustika Ratu, (8) terms of dress in Miss Universe contest, (9) physical transformation of Puteri Indonesia, (10) top 3 Puteri Indonesia 2020 as an ideal beauty standard. The concept of the active audience shows the uniqueness of the 8 informants involved. This study involved male and female informants who have a variety of ages and different backgrounds. The study results are: (1) female informants show 18 dominant meanings, 12 negotiations, and 10 oppositions. (2) Male informants showed 22 dominant meanings, 17 negotiations, and 1 opposition. First, 4 female informants with an age range 16-40 years produced variations meaning. Two informants aged 16 and 27 have the majority of dominant meanings. Both of them are active in following information about a beauty pageant. However, 25 years old informant who is actively following the information of beauty pageants have a majority opposition meaning, which also the majority meanings of 40 years old informants. Meanwhile, the informant, who is 40 years old, is not actively following beauty pageant information. Second, 4 male informants with an age range 23-32 years produced variations meaning. Three informants with an age range 23-28 years are actively following information of a beauty pageant. 2 informants in 23 and 25 years old have the majority of meanings in a dominant position. However, the difference indicated of the informant in 28-year old that have interpretation divided into dominant and negotiation meaning. Meanwhile, a 32 years old informant who is not actively following the information of beauty pageants showed 5 dominant meanings, 4 negotiation meanings, and 1 opposition meaning.
