Abstract

There were many domestic violence cases that happened to women in Indonesia, but many people still refused to talk about because these case is a taboo conversation. That made domestic violence case were difficult to be discovered. Domestic violence cases increase every year in Indonesia, but only a few victims who willing to report the case. Domestic violence victim seems to be muted, so the women victim’s voice didn’t heard.This study aimed to describe women’s experience as domestic violence victims and the the background. The type of this study is descriptive with qualitative approach, critical paradigm, also feminist phenomenology as design of the research. The transcribed interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three women who has experienced domestic violence and took place in Semarang. The theory to guide this study is Muted Group theory by Cheris Kramae and researcher relate it with family communication. This study shows that women who has experienced domestic violence were muted with mockery, ritual, control, and harassment. The actors who involved were the dominant group (men), family, social norm, society, and police. Domestic violence were impact to women and researcher divide it into physical impact (permanent injury and temporary injury) and non-physical impact (psychological disturbance of children, trauma, depression, feelings of shame, until the loss of confidence). Solution of the muted women as domestic violence victimswere through education, openness, and accept help from others. This study found that there was domination pattern by perpetrators through contrition towards domestic violence victims to convince domestic violence victims to be tolerate of the abuse, so women as domestic violence victim couldn’t realize that they had been abused and and assume that violence is a common occurrence at some moments. In the end, women as domestic violence victims felt guilty and responsible for the behavior of husbands women victims became more persisting.
