Abstract

The result of Basic Health Research in 2013 shows that the prevalence of cancer in children in the age of 0-14 years old around 16.291 cases. While the kind of cancer that is most suffered by the children in Indonesia are leukemia and retinoblastoma. In more than 50 percent of cancer cases on children, children with cancer just come to health services when they have already in an advanced stadium. The minimum knowledge of parents about cancer become one of the reason cancer was not detected earlier. Whereas if it is detected earlier, the children with cancer can be cured with medication and good therapy (Data Center and Health Information, 2015). This research discussing on how the use of family communication to cultivate healing motivation against children who suffer cancer. Prior research found that children with cancer who have been experiencing chemotherapy feeling a quite high anxiety. They tend to get depression, withdrawal, and social stress. Therefore, there is need any support from people surround them. This research uses phenomenology to understand the phenomenon of the people who experienced it directly. The theory that is used is Theory of Verbal and Nonverbal, and Theory of Health Communication. The research was conducted towards three parents who have children with cancer in the age 5-14 years old with the length of suffering <1 year, ± 1 year, and >1 year. The result of this research shows that family communication is conducted by parents who have children with cancer disease to cultivating passion and rising motivation of children to heal from the disease they suffer. Parents have good communication ability, either verbal or nonverbal communication that is very important and needed on treatment to decrease anxiety, fear, and sadness from the children who suffer cancer. Parents doing verbal and non verbal communication such as kissing, hugging, carrying, story telling, singing, and playing together to divert the attention of children who suffer cancer from painful and make them be more passionate. Communication with family and communication with surroundings including doctor can give reference towards parents to knowing good treatment way of children with cancer. By therapeutic communication, parents can uplift and motivate children to be healed from cancer they suffer.
