Abstract

In the digital age as now, people can easily access various informations they need. Social media is an internet-based technology that provides entertainment and information quickly, precisely, practically, and is accessible to all circles of society. Social media YouTube is very interesting to research, because this social media can display various information from various characteristics of society in the form of audio visual impressions. This study aims to know the audience acceptance of information on the religious defamation case by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in social media YouTube. This is a descriptive-qualitative research using reception analysis approach. The reception analysis sees the audience as producers of meaning, not just being media consumers. This study uses Stuart Hall's decoding-encoding theory to help explain the decoding-encoding process of information presented by YouTube's social media.In addition, this research uses semiotics Roland Barthes method to analyze the dominant meaning resulting from the many messages conveyed by the media related to the religious defamation case by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama The result shows that the audiences actively interpret informations about religious defamation case by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama they receive. Audience interpretation is divided into three reception positions: dominant-hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositinal position. Three of six informants agree with the meaning in dominant-hegemonic position, that Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s statement contains elements of defamation. Such audiences interpret Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s statement according to the dominant meaning presented by social media YouTube. The other two informants are in negotiated position because they consider that not all contents provided by social media YouTube are acceptable to them. They accept the dominant meaning that exists, yet have other alternative meanings. Meanwhile, the last informant is in oppositional position for rejecting the content provided by social media YouTube. This informant understands that Basuki Tjahaja Purnama did not deliberately throw the statement so that there are no elements of defamation in it.
