Abstract
This descriptive qualitative research is carried out in Surakarta, Central Java. The focus of this research is to observe the form and function of swear words in Javanese speech community and how the swear words reflect the characteristics of Javanese people. The findings shows that (1) the form of the swear words are: animals name, human body part, profession, mental condition, mystical creatures, things, family member, and euphemism; (2) The function of swearing words are to express anger, to express irritation, to express admiration, to joke around, to show intimacy, and to express their feeling; (3) The form and function of swear words shows that Javanese people respect all of body parts above the neck, any body organs related to sex are considered as taboo, animals are disdained, older family members are very respected, someone who suffers from mental illness are negatively stereotyped, and basically Javanese people have very polite speech expression.
