Abstract

Master Program in Nursing Nursing Leadership and Management Specialty Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University January 2017 ABSTRACT Shindi Hapsari The Roles of Nursing Lecturers in Partnership between Academic Institution and Hospital: A Phenomenological Study at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Yogyakarta xxii +113 pages + 2 tables + 2 schemes + 20 appendices Nursing lecturers and clinical nurses have an important contribution in the development of nursing education since both are in an integral part of the collaborative partnership to develop nursing education in the colleges and hospitals. The lecturers have so far provided services in the college by transforming their knowledge to the students. However, in practice, the lectures have also played a role in the clinical setting, which is to evaluate and supervise the students’ clinical performance. The roles of lecturers are not yet clearly described in the memorandum of understanding or in the real practice since they are, in addition to their status as lecturers, also a part of the nursing profession. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the roles of nursing lecturers in the cooperative partnerships between the academic institution (colleges) and hospital. This study aimed to investigate the roles of nursing lecturers in the partnerships between the academic institution and hospital. The present study employed a qualitative design. The data were collected by in-depth interviews, observations and documentation. The purposive sampling techniques was used in this study. The researchers conducted the interviews with nursing lecturers from UMY who were in charge of the partnership activities in PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping as many as 5 primary informants and 3 triangulation informants. The content analysis was employed to analyze the data. The results showed that the roles of nursing lecturers in the partnerships were associated with the roles of their duties and responsibilities, which included the aspects of education, research, and community services, as well as the duty in the nursing service. Furthermore, the nursing lecturers also played the roles and functions as the organizer, facilitator, innovator, inventor, rolemodel, evaluator, supervisor and counselor. These roles and responsibilities have a reciprocal relationship within the partnership due to the collaboration between the two parties to form new innovative programs. The factors affecting the process of effective partnerships included the communication, coordination, commitment,interdependence, vision and mission, similar goal, synergistic program, openess and good communication. The benefits of the partnerships were to increase the health services, optimize the human resources, and improve the teaching and learning process by the support from the academic institution and hospital collaboration. The study concluded that the role obligation and functions of the nursing lecturers in the partnerships between the academic institution and hospitals provided many benefits for both especially in the human resource development, and the improvement of the quality of services and education. It is suggested that further studies improve the variable of nursing lecturers’ roles in the academic partnerships with the hospital.
