Abstract
Depression is a mood disorder that commonly occurs in breast cancer patients. Perceptions of disease severity were formed through the acquisition of the individual to the disease thus influenced the condition of breast cancer patients and caused emotional distress and mood disorders, especially depression. The purpose of this research was to understand the relationship between perception of illness severity and level of depression in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotheraphy at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital, Surakarta. The study was conducted in October 2016. This research used the quantitative-correlation design with cross sectional method. Consecutive sampling used as sampling techique. A total of 36 respondents consisting of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, filled out 3 questionnaires; demographic, The Revised Illness Perception Quesstionaire part consequences IP6-11, and Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) Indonesian version. The results showed that all respondents were female. Most of the respondents had elementary education (55.6%), were in stage 3 of breast cancer (69.4%) and had been undergoing chemotherapy at least once (33.3%). A total of 52.8% of respondents perceived the illness as not severe and 47.2% perceived the disease as severe. There were also 61.1% of respondents with depression and 38.9% had no depression. The results of Chi Square test found a significant correlation between perception of illness severity and depression (r = 9.972, P value = 0.002). The nurse as a health professional should be able to facilitate patient’s need by providing the right information in accordance with the patient's condition. By providing the appropriate health information, the nurse could aim for establishment of proper perception of illness severity which lead to development of hope and reduce the risk of depression.
