Abstract
Background: The postpartum period is a period after the placenta comes out, which is the time to restore the organ content of pre-pregnancy lasts about six weeks. Postpartum period consists of immediate postpartum, early postpartum and late postpartum. Independence in self-care during the postpartum period is important in order to restore health to be reached. Nursing mothers during the postpartum period is influenced by several factors such as knowledge, motivation, culture, beliefs, experience and age. Objective: to know association between knowledge and motivation with postpartum mothers independence in self-care during the early postpartum. Methods: The study was observational analytic with cross sectional approach. Data collection on the March - May 2016 to early postpartum mothers with totally sampling methods. The research instrument with a questionnaire, consisting of a questionnaire of knowledge, motivation and independence in self care during early postpartum. Analysis using Spearman test with significance P <0.05. Results: There are 47 samples, the characteristics of the majority of respondents were in the age range 20-35 years (87.2%), senior high school (44.7%), multiparous (68.1%), did’nt work (80.9%), Javanese ethnic group (93.6%), and financing of the general labor (70.2%). Results of bivariate analysis, there is no association between the level of knowledge towards independence of postpartum mothers in self-care during the early postpartum ( p=0.072 and R=0.265) and there is association between motivation towards independence postpartum mothers in self-care during the early postpartum ( p=0.004 dan R=0.417). Conclusion: there is a significant association between motivation with independence in self-care postpartum mothers during the early postpartum and no significant association between level of knowledge with with independence in selfcare postpartum mothers during the early postpartum.
