Abstract
Background: Alkaline water that has basic pH value is expected to increase the pH value of the acidic airways of asthmatics due to the difficulty of expiration that can be measured using a Peak Flow Meter objectively. Monitoring of value Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) can help control the symptoms of an asthma attack. Objective: To identify if there is any effect of alkaline water toward the score of Peak Expiratory Flow Rate in asthmatic children. Methods: An experimental study of one group pre and post test design were held on Lung Health Centres Community (BKPM) Semarang region in the period from April to May, 2016. The subjects were children with asthma (n = 15) who were given alkaline water to drink every day as much as one bottle (600ml) for two weeks. The data were retrieved using a Peak Flow Meter before (pre) and after 2 weeks (post) of alkaline water consumption to get the score of PEFR. Statistical test using paired T-test, Independent T-test and Shapiro Wilk test. Result: The PEFR score of asthmatic children before being given alkaline water(pre) was 147 ± 40.43 while the value after being given (post) was 170.66 ±46.20. Most children with asthma has increased the PEFR score in which the differences (delta) was 23.66 ± 26.82. There was a significant relationship between the alkaline water consumption with PEFR scores of children with asthma (p = 0.004). Physical activities and Body Mass Index in asthmatic children did not have a significant effect on the PEFR score (p >0.05) Conclusion: There was a positive effect of alkaline water toward the increasing of PEFR score in asthmatic children aged 6-14 years who were treated in BKPM Semarang. Keywords: Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR), Peak Flow Meter, asthmatic
