Abstract
Background :Fluphenazine decanoate is antiphychotic drug that is often used to treat schizophrenia, which patients are increasing every years. This injection drug is given continuously to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia so that patients can obtain better life. However, it’s harmful effect to liver should be taken into account since it is consumed for a long time. Mangosteen pericarp extracts as source of antioxidant has ability to minimize liver damaged due to fluphenazine excessive metabolism. Aim :To identify the effect of mangosteen pericarp extracts (Garcinia mangostana L.) on liver microscopic structure in fluphenazine decanoate exposed wistar rats. Methods :True experimental study “post test only control group design” using 12 wistar rats were divided into 2 groups, namely K and P. K group was administered fluphenazine decanoate injection 2mg/kgBW/week, while P group was administered fluphenazine decanoate injection 2mg/kgBW/week and mangosteen pericarp extracts 120mg/day. The treatment was 50 days, then the rats were terminated and the liver microscopic structure was observed with Manja Roenigk Criteria. Results :K group showed most of liver histological structure suffered heavy damage spesifically necrosis (45.8%), hydropic degeneration (33.3%), and parenchymatous degeneration (20.8%). P group showed better liver histological structure viz parenchymatous degeneration (55%), hydropic degeneration (25%), normal (10%), and necrosis (10%). Hypothesis test showed significant difference between group K and group P (p<0.05). Conclusions :Administration of mangosteen pericarp extracts provides protective effect on liver microscopic structure in fluphenazine decanoate exposed wistar rats. Keywords :mangosteen pericarp extracts, fluphenazine decanoate, liver microscopic structure
