Abstract

Background : Liver has an important role in metabolism and detoxification process. The enzymes SGOT and SGPT is commonly used as an indicator of liver’s damage because there will be increasing level of the enzymes if there’s damage to liver cells membrane. Gynura divaricata is commonly used as herbal drug to treat breast cancer. Yet, it contains a hepatotoxic and carcinogenic compound of pyrrolizidine alkaloid. Objective : This study aims to prove the effect of Gynura divaricata extracts to levels of SGOT and SGPT in breast cancer induced Sprague Dawley rats. Methods : This research is an experimental research with true experimental post test only control group design. This research uses three groups; one negative control group (K1) which is not exposed to the Gynura divaricata extracts nor breast cancer induction; a positive control group (K2) is breast cancer induced rats; a treatment group (P) is breast cancer induced rats which are exposed to the Gynura divaricata extracts 750 mg/kg/day. Results : There was significant effect against breast cancer according to the SGOT level and there were not significant effect to SGPT level, proved by the positive control group’s increased level of SGOT by 39.19% and 11.80 % of SGPT level compared to the negative control group. On the treatment group, there is significant increasing level of SGOT by 25,35% and not significant increasing level of SGPT by 8,13% compared to positive control group. Conclusion : Giving of Gynura divaricata extracts with a dose of 750 mg/kg/day for 14 days increases the levels of SGOT and SGPT in the treatment group. Key Words : Gynura divaricata extracts, Pyrrolizidine alkaloid, Breast Cancer, SGOT, SGPT
