Abstract

Background : HIV AIDS epidemic has now spread over all countries in the world. Semarang contributes most of the cases in Central Java. HIV AIDS has caused numerous problems in the infected individual including physical, social, and emotional. One of the emotional problems faced by PLWHA is depression. Depression cases in PLWHA are estimated to be 60% of total depression cases. Continuous depression will cause a drop in physical and mental condition, so it will greatly affect the quality of life of PLWHA. Aim : To find out whether there is a relation between depression and quality of life, and to know whether there is a relation between demographic factors and quality of life of patients with HIV/AIDS in RSUP dr. Kariadi Semarang. Methods : This study is an observational study using cross-sectional method. Depression level and quality of life are measured using BDI and WHO-QOL questionnaire. The samples were 92 patients with HIV/AIDS in the Department of Tropical and Infectious Disease RSUP dr. Kariadi Semarang that met the inclusion criterias. The sampling technique was conducted with non probability sampling through consecutive sampling. Data analysis was using Chi Square. Results : The analysis showed an association between depression and quality of life in the environmental domain (p=0.037, alpha=0.05), and association between time since diagnosed and quality of life in psychological domain (p=0,009, alpha=0.05). Conclusion : There is a significant relation between depression and quality of life in the environmental domain and also between time since diagnosed and the quality of life in psychological domain.
