Abstract
Background : Tuberculosis (TB) in Indonesia still 4th ranks in the world for the number of cases. World Health Organization (WHO) assumed that the control of TB was worsen with the increased number of diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, whose incidence is estimated around 387 millions people, although it is predicted to reach 592 millions people in 2030. According to recent meta-analysis, diabetic patients have three fold risk to be infected with TB compared to non-diabetic ones (95% confidence interval). Aim : to determine the prevalence of TB infection in diabetic patients in Dr. Kariadi General Hospital Semarang. Methods : Desain penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif observasional The research design was an observational descriptive research with cross sectional design, Samples were obtained from medical records of diabetic in patients with TB infection which were included in Dr. Kariadi General Hospital in Januari-December 2013.. Results: From 902 cases of diabetic patients in the period of 1st January – 31th December 2013, 103 diabetic cases with TB were obtained. The number of patients met the exclusion criteria was 21 people and among 82 patients meeting the inclusion criteria, 48 (54,5%) were males and 34 (41,5%) were females. This result demonstrated that the prevalence of TB infection in diabetic patients suffered from DM for 0-5 years (69,5%) and the average blood sugar status was uncontrolled, which was found in 49 patients (59,8%). Conclusion : The prevalence of diabetes in TB infected patients was 9,1 % with most age span of DM-TB patients 45-64 years old, duration of diabetes 0-5 years, and 59,8 % had uncontrolled blood sugar status. This prevalence was lower compared to researches conducted in anothercenters. Keywords : DM with TB, Age, Duration of diabetes, Blood sugar status
