Abstract

Background: IDF estimates around 20-25 percent of the world’s adult population have metabolic syndrome and the highest prevalence about 55-64 years old. Some earlier studies reported the higher impairment lung function in population of metabolic syndrome. PEFR is one of the pulmonary function test parameters. Aim: To find out the correlation betweens waist circumference and peak expiratory flow rate in population of metabolic syndrome. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in 30 subjects above 40 years old with metabolic syndrome in Padangsari village, Banyumanik, Semarang. The data are subjects characteristics, waist circumference, and PEFR among study subjects by using mini-Wright Peak Flow Meter. The Pearson test and chi-square test were used for statistical analysis. Result: The study shows 93,33% of the subjects above 40 years old with metabolic syndrome were increased and substantially increased waist circumference and 56,67% showed abnormal PEFR among population of metabolic syndrome. In the group of population that increased waist circumference, 42,86% of them showed abnormal PEFR and in the group of population that substantially increased waist circumference, 78,57% of them showed abnormal PEFR. The pearson test showed a moderate degree of negative correlation waist circumference with PEFR in population of metabolic syndrome (r= -0,42;p= 0,021). The chi-square test showed a significant relationship waist circumference categories with PEFR in population of syndrome metaboli (p=0,04) Conclusion: There is a negative correlation with moderate degree waist circumference with peak expiratory flow rate in population of metabolic syndrome. Keyword: Metabolic Syndrome, waist circumference, peak expiratory flow rate, PEFR
