Abstract

Background: Nearly 2 billion people from 192 countries around the world have inadequate iodine intake. About 36.5% are school-age children, including Indonesia. One of the effects of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) can cause brain damage that can affect cognitive abilities and intelligence. Intelligence has an important role in process and results of learning, including academic achievement. Objective: To analyze the association between intelligence and academic achievement in children on endemic IDD area. Methods: This study was an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. Samples were 70 elementary school children who live in IDD area in Sub Kertek, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java Province. The data are subjects characteristics, IQ score using CFIT methods, and academic achievement using report cards. Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Bivariate chi-square test showed significant between intelligence and academic achievement in children on IDD area (p = 0.000). With X2 value = 27.008, df = 2 Conclusion: There is association between intelligence and academic achievement in children in endemic IDD areas. Keywords: IDD, intelligence, academic achievement
