Abstract

Background. The rapid advancement of Medical Sciences causes decreasing of infectious diseases so that more people suffering degenerative diseases instead. Hypertension is an example of degenerative disease. According to WHO, hypertensive patients are increasing continously. Antihypertensive drugs are reported to cause gingival enlargement and reduction in salivary flow. One of drugs which often used in health centers is captopril. Objective. To prove the effect of captopril on salivary flow and gingival enlargement in patients with hypertension. Methods. This was an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. The number of respondents overall was 70 people consisting of captopril user group and control group. Subject sampling was performed with consecutive sampling method based on the patient's arrival at the Puskesmas Srondol and Puskesmas Ngesrep. Results. Statistical analysis test with Mann Whitney concluded that there was no significant difference of gingival enlargement between patients with hypertension using captopril and the control group with p = 0.0760 (p> 0.05). There was significant difference of salivary flow rate between patients with hypertension using captopril and the control group with p = 0.000 (p <0.05). Conclusion. Captopril did not cause gingival enlargement. However, it caused salivary flow rate reduction on hypertensive patients in Puskesmas Srondol and Puskesmas Ngesrep, Semarang.
