Abstract

Background Severe preeclampsia is associated with changes in hemodynamic status. The changes cause umbilical cord tissue adaptation, including changes in the area of Wharton’s jelly. Aim Examine the differences between the area of Wharton’s jelly in severe preeclampsia and normotensive pregnancy Methods This research used descriptive analytic design with cross sectional method. Samples were taken by purposive sampling method. Umbilical cord tissues were obtained from 16 mothers with severe preeclampsia as case group and 16 mothers with normotensive pregnancy as control group. The samples xv underwent tissue processing and stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin (H.E.). The examination of the samples used Dot Slide microscope. Result There was difference between the area of Wharton’s jelly in severe preeclampsia and normotensive pregnancy. The area of Wharton’s jelly in severe preeclampsia was 70.12(23.62-135.46) mm2, was higher significantly than the area of Wharton’s jelly in normotensive pregnancy, which was 38.29(23.74-79.07). Conclusion There were differences between the area of Wharton’s jelly in severe preeclampsia and normotensive pregnancy. The area of Wharton’s jelly in severe preeclampsia was wider than normotensive pregnancy. Key Words: Severe preeclampsia, umbilical cord, Wharton’s jelly.
