Abstract

Background: Aging process causes a decline in cognitive function. Physical activities such as exercise can maintain the cognitive function. MENPORA elderly gymnastic is one type of exercises which is suitable for elderly. Aim: To prove that MENPORA elderly gymnastic training can improve cognitive function in Kemuning elderly group, Banyumanik, Semarang. Methods: The study was a Quasi Experimental with one group pretest and posttest without control design. This study included 20 elderly people, part of Kemuning elderly group, who met the inclusion criteria and no exclusion criteria. Samples were given a MENPORA elderly gymnastic training 2 times a week for 8 weeks. Examination of cognitive function used MoCA-Ina test. Hypothesis testing used Mc Nemar test. Results: There were 17 people (85%) with cognitive impairment and 3 people (15%) with normal cognitive function before given a MENPORA elderly gymnastic training. After MENPORA elderly gymnastic training, there were 4 people (20%) with cognitive impairment and 16 people (80%) with normal cognitive function. There was a significant difference between the proportion of cognitive function before and after the MENPORA elderly gymnastic training (p <0.001). Conclusions: There is a significant difference between the proportion of cognitive function before and after MENPORA elderly gymnastic training.
