Abstract
Background: Stroke is the main health issue in the world, and the second leading cause for dementia. Hypertension is the major risk factor and significantly increases the possibility for stroke. Few studies showed that increase of systolic blood pressure is related to deterioration of cognitive function. Retinal artery reflects the cerebral microvasculature. Retinal artery disorders correlates with age, hypertension and other processes with similar pathology in brain’s small vessels. Purpose: To determine whether cognitive disorder correlates with hypertensive retinopathy in post ischemic stroke patients Method: This study was cross-sectional, using consecutive sampling of 65 post ischemic stroke subjects with controlled hypertension. Subjects were taken from the outpatient care of RSUP dr. Kariadi, November 2010 to March 2011. Cognitive function of every patient was examined using the MMSE and CDT, funduscope to find KW hypertensive retinopathy. Result: There were 40 subjects who had cognitive disorder and 25 subjects without cognitive disorder. One subject was found with both KW 0 hypertensive retinopathy and cognitive disorder, one subject with KW 1, 38 subjects with KW 2. Chi Square test was performed and a significant correlation was found between KW 2 with cognitive disorder and p=0,022. Logistic regression test for hypertensive retinopathy KW 2 was done and OR=0,080 Conclusion: Cognitive disorder correlated with hypertensive retinopathy in post ischemic stroke patients, that is hypertensive retinopathy KW2 being protective in its correlation with cognitive disorder Key words: Post ischemic stroke, cognitive disorder, hypertensive retinopathy
