Abstract
Background. Diarrhea remains a major health problem in Indonesia, in 2003 the prevalence of diarrhea increased to 374 per 1000 population and episodes in children < 5 years up to 1.08 times/year, an increase compared to 1996. From results of laboratory studies and clinical trials, pure honey has a bactericidal activity against enteropathogenic bacteria. Objective. To define and prove the difference in frequency of diarrhea, the length of stay (LOS), increased weight gain in patients with acute diarrhea who received standar therapy and honey supplementation compared with control. Methods. Single blinded RCT, was done in 70 subjects aged 1-5 years old children suffering from acute diarrhea with mild-moderate dehydration in Kariadi and Ketileng hospital in May 2009 - January 2010. Analysis was done using the Chi-Square, t test, multivariate and survival analysis. Results. The mean age was 18,66±0,66 months, the average LOS in the honey supplementation group was 59,64 hours (±3,89) vs 71,20 hours (±3,89) in the control group p=0,036 (95%CI -22,71;-0,77). There was no statistically significant increase in body weight (p=0,947). Differences in the frequency of diarrhea between the 2 groups occurred on day 2 (95%CI -2,87;-0,22), day 4 (95%CI -1,52;-0,08) and day 5 (95%CI -0,99;-0,44), p < 0,05. Supplementation groups recovered 50%, control group 25% in 3rd day of hospitalization Conclusion. Honey proved to shorten duration of LOS, reduction the frequency of diarrhea in day 2, 4 and 5 and 50% recovery occurred on the 3rd day. Body weight increase was found no significant. Key words. Acute diarrhea, honey, the length of stay.
