Penggunaan Strategi Kesantunan Dalam Tindak Tutur Direktif Pada Novel Memoirs of a Geisha Karya Arthur Golden

Abstract

ABSTRACT Politeness, a topic discussed in Pragmatics, is one of the factors that influence to develop a good communication. People sometimes find failure in their communication because they neglect politeness aspects or because they do not understand the politeness rules of other cultures as literary works, such a novel. This final project is the analysis of the realization of politeness strategies in directive speech acts as found in a novel entitled Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. The problem discussed in this study is how are Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies and super-strategies realized by the characters of the novel during their interaction. The purpose of this study is to find out and to describe the ways in which the characters of the novel revealed politeness strategies and superstrategies during their interaction. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The collected data are in the form of utterances taken from Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha. They are collected through the purposive sampling. The method used in this study is padan pragmatis. The result of the study shows that the total numbers of collected data contain all the four strategies of politeness strategies. Bald on record is the strategy mostly used by the utterances of the novel.
