Abstract

Background: Dental plaque is an important role in developing dental caries. Bacteria could form colonies inside dental plaque and ferment carbohydrate onto acid that cause caries. Drinking green tea (Camellia sinensis) could prevent dental plaque formation. Catechin, which is the prominent element in green tea, could inhibit the activity of glicocyltransferase enzyme and kill causative bacteria. This research had a purpose to find the differences of dental plaque index between treatment and control group. Methods: This research was a quasi experimental with “pre-post test with control group design”. Samples consists of 60 students of Pondok Pesantren Al-Amin Mranggen, Demak, divided into 2 groups, without treatment (control) and that given by 200 ml green tea (treatment group). The dental plaque index between treatment and control group data were analyzed by the test for differences, using SPSS 10.5 for Windows, with p<0,05. Results: The Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a significant difference (p<0,05) between treatment and control group. Conclusion: The dental plaque index of treated group was lower than control.
