Abstract

Background: Obesity is a chronic condition characterised by an excess of body fat. Obesity in adolescence also take a problem for social life and emotional. Food habit in adolescent is significantly influenced by their change of life style, included in life style to consume fast food. This research was aimed to know whether consumption of fast food is a risk factor obesity in adolescent. Subject and Methods: This was an analytic observational study using case control design. Sampels consist of 69 students high school with obesity as case and others 69 students high school with no obesity as control. It was called obesity if BMI score higher than 25. Controls were friends of cases that were age-and sex-matched with cases. Food frequency questionnaires were used to collect information on students consumption during the last one month, and other information were collected by questionnaires. The data analysed by SPSS 13.0 for Windows with Chi square test, and OR (Odds Ratio) was also done to know the relation of risk factors. Results: The students with energy from fast food higher than 6%, 4.2 times more possible become fat (OR=4,2, with 95% CI=1,399-12,665) than with energy from fast food lower than 6%. Conclusion: The higher contribution of fast food to total energy, the higher risk of obesity.
