Abstract

Identification changes in temperature and the value of CO2 emission on the surface of a shallow mountain smoothing is one way to find out the activities of Merapi volcano. Measurement of temperature and CO2 gasses was conducted on 5th-6th September 2007, starting at 08.00am until 04.00 pm the north side of the volcano trim. Temperature data acquisition and gas emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)surface performed on 15 points with coordinate 110o27’03,6’’ BT to 110o27’39,7’’ BT and 07o30’52,6’’ LS to 07o31’47,5’’LS, at altitude 1700 m to 2400m above sea level with a depth of 72cm from the ground. The instrument used is a thermocouple sensor and gauge the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) of ground. Change the value of temperature and CO2 emission of altitude obtained as a result of observation. In the shallow surface of the volcano has smoothed the temperature gradient value of -4,6 oC/km and the gradient of CO2 emission -4 oC/km. At an altitude of 2100m there was an increase of temperature and the value of CO2 emission. Temperature change of altitude caused by the steam passing through the rocks around it so that the rocks experienced hydrothermal alteration processes and has a value higher conductifitas. Heat flowing fluid contains CO2 it is affecting the increase of CO2 emission value is proportionalto the increase of temperature value.
