KONSTRUKSI PEMBERITAAN UANG PANAI’ DI MEDIA DARING (Analisis Framing Budaya Uang Panai’ Pada Portal Berita Tribun Timur)

Abstract

Uang Panai’ is one of the traditions and is a mandatory requirement in traditional BugisMakassar marriages. The high amount of Uang Panai’ cannot be separated from the attention of the mass media. This can cause anxiety for young people in South Sulawesi, especially men if they want to marry women of Bugis-Makassar descent. The mass media have a role in the inheritance of cultural values, especially local media because their presence is expected to be able to uphold the values of local wisdom of an area and function as a fortress in preserving culture. The purpose of this study is to describe the framing of the news of Uang Panai' in the Tribun Timur news portal. This research is at the level of mass communication using constructivism paradigms and sociocultural traditions, The theories used in this research are the second level of Agenda-Setting theory and the Social Construction of Mass Media Theory. The data analysis technique used in this research is framing analysis by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The observed findings are that the Tribun Timur tended to use a sociological frame to frame the cultural events of Uang Panai that occurred at the traditional wedding of the Bugis-Makassar tribe in South Sulawesi. Based on the results of the overall news analyzed, the Tribun Timur tends to report on the high Uang Panai in Bugis-Makassar traditional weddings that arise from the observed analytical units (syntax, script, thematic, and rhetorical), as well as discussing the impact of the Uang Panai culture.The Tribun Timur often highlights the social status in terms of education, family background, as well as the work of the bride and groom through the news presented. This can show that people who marry with a high amount of money are only done by people who have a high social status. Not only that, the news that discussed the impact of Uang Panai also highlighted this, such as the news that discussed the existence of a man who is a fishpond farmer who was involved in a Uang Panai fraud case. In addition, the Tribun Timur also highlighted social status through reporting on cases of women who committed suicide because of money issues. The news writer revealed that the victim was an elementary school graduate and her lover was just an ordinary farmer. It can offend a person's economic aspects and can be interpreted that social status can be a barrier for someone to get married. Even though the Uang Panai reports tend to be compiled using a sociological frame by the Tribun Timur, there are also some news stories that use a psychological frame. This can be seen from the way news writers define the meaning of pennies. In fact, the Tribun Timur as a local mass media should be able to explain about panai correctly. However, the news writer said that Uang Panai was a dowry for Bugis-Makassar marriages given by the men to the women.
