Abstract

ABSTRACT Safina, Ghaida. 2020. “Discourse Analysisof Integrity: Cohesion and Coherence in Japanese Fairy Tales”. Thesis, Japanese Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Diponegoro University. Supervisor: Elizabeth Ika Hesti ANR., S.S., M.Hum. This study aims to describe the cohesion and coherence signs, as well as to analyze the cohesiveness and coherence of discourse in Japanese fairy tales. The data in this study were taken from Japanese fairy tales entitled ‘Kaguya Hime’ 、 and ‘Tsuru no Ongaeshi’. The data collection method in this thesis uses observation method, using tapping as a basic technique, and note taking technique as a follow-up technique. Furthermore, at the data analysis stage using the equivalent method with the technique of sorting the determining elements. Then in presenting the data, using informal methods and presenting the results of the analysis descriptively. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that there are 59 data from 10 cohesion signs, namely: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, and collocation. Furthermore, there are coherence in both Fairy Tales showed implicitly and explicitly. This study found some cohesion and coherence signs which indicate that the discourse contained in the Japanese fairy tales entitled “Kaguya Hime” and “Tsuru no Ongaeshi” is cohesive and coherent.
