UPACARA PATIWANGI Studi tentang Perkawinan Beda Kasta Masyarakat Bali dalam Novel Tarian Bumi Karya Oka Rusmini (Kajian Antropologi Sastra)

Abstract

This study use a novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini as material object, and inter-dynastic marriage in Balinese society and its aspects as formal object. It use descriptive analysis methods. The purpose of this study is to describe the intrinsic elements and explain inter-dynastic marriage that related to patiwangi ceremony in the novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini. The author uses structural theory to explain novel’s intrinsic elements (figure and characterization, setting, plot, and theme). The author also uses the study of literary anthropology to examine inter-dynastic marriage between triwangsa woman and jaba wangsa man that related to patiwangi ceremony. The result of structural analysis of the novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini: there are 16 characters which are devided into two main characters and fourteen additional characters. The setting of the novel is in a village in Bali. The plot that has a chronological relationship that contains the intial, middle, final stages and logical relationship that have cause and effect between events in the novel. The major theme is the constancy of a woman against her choice, and the minor theme are love, inter-dynastic marriage, animism, and the caste system in Bali. The result of anthropological analysis studies on inter-dynastic marriage in novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini: The inter-dynastic marriage that done by triwangsa woman and jaba wangsa man, as is done by Telaga and Wayan is called pratiloma marriage. All types of inter-dynastic marriage practices are avoided. The social consequence is the loss of attributes of Brahman caste to Telaga, and Telaga disconnected from her Brahman family. The effect for the perpetrators of inter-dynastic marriage like Telaga and Wayan is get negative opinions from their family and society. That consequences are misery of the perpetrators of inter-dynastic marriage. That miseries will be felt as a disaster due to inter-dynastic marriage. According to the beliefs of the Balinese Hindu society, the disaster occurs because Telaga didn’t do patiwangi ceremony before married to Wayan. Therefore, patiwangi ceremony must be done to break all miseries from inter-dynastic marriage that done by Telaga. Keywords : Tarian Bumi, structure, anthropology
