Abstract

The purpose of this study is to get a comprehensive picture while conducting a critical analysis of the representation of library space and consumption practices by digital native users of the library space. The research method uses ethnography, with data collection techniques using participant observation, interviews, and documentation. Key informants numbered six people with digital native users characteristics and were selected purposively. Additional informants come from internal employees at the UGM Library. The results showed that space representation became dominant because the reformulation of the construction of the library space initially was to direct digital native users. The library space is also a paradox space. There are regulations that are majority deviation and efficient that are inefficient. The library space becomes a production space but the meaning is different. Digital native users using the UGM Library space and various facilities provided by the space concept for personal interests in the context of using economic transactions. Library capitalization becomes dominant. Logic industrial is used by libraries so that there is dominance in terms of regulating library space. Mediation also occurs in the context of the library. The application of technologization in libraries raises irrationality and dehumanization so as to reduce social relations. In its social practice, digital native users have their own agency in consuming library space. The library space has now become an impenetrable space, meaning that it is a space that eliminates bulkhead between work and non-work. There are several activities when digital native users make library space a leisure space, such as: to get freedom from social, environmental and domestic pressures; looking for entertainment because it uses space not to produce ideas but for other pleasures; as a cathartic space, as a form of escape from uncomfortable space and from various formal structures. The library space is no longer a frightening space with difficult bureaucratic label, but has shifted into a dynamic and fluid public space. The library space is also an alternative space to find freedom for digital native users in carrying out activities. Digital native users using library space for lifestyle as a space to show who they are, meaning to be a display space for building distinctions and lifestyles. The distinction built between students and fellow visitors is done through different behaviors, choice of space, choice of beverage consumption, ownership of the device, and through activities. Digital natives users tend to display the capital they have. In social practices the library space is also a community hub space to form the collective identity of digital native users.
