Abstract

Warak Ngendog sebagai warisan budaya Kota Semarang mulai mengalami transformasi bentuk maupun fungsi. Tulisan ini akan mengungkap bagaimana masyarakat Kota Semarang memaknai dan memahami simbolisasi Warak Ngendog serta dampak yang timbul akibat transformasi Warak Ngendog. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode etnografi dengan beberapa teknik penelitian, yaitu observasi partisipasi, wawancara mendalam, dan studi pustaka. Teori yang digunakan antara lain teori strukturasi oleh Giddens dan teori city branding oleh Keith Dinne. Pendekatan yang digunakan untuk mengkaji penelitian ini yaitu interpretivisme simbolik oleh Clifford Geertz. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, masyarakat menginterpretasikan Warak Ngendog sebagai sebuah ikon kota sehingga dipakai di berbagai kegiatan sehingga memunculkan fungsi baru Warak Ngendog sebagai media branding, sebagai bentuk media dakwah, dan sebagai sumber pendapatan karena telah menjadi inovasi industri kreatif. Faktor-faktor munculnya perbedaan interpretasi antara lain faktor edukasi dan kebebasan berekspresi dari pemerintah kota, selain itu transformasi dari Warak Ngendog memunculkan dampak positif berupa meningkatnya perekonomian masyarakat dan Warak Ngendog lebih dikenal masyarakat luas, serta dampak negatif berupa perdebatan antara pemerintah dengan pegiat seni budaya dan berkurangnya sense of belonging masyarakat terhadap Warak Ngendog akibat transformasi yang terjadi. Warak Ngendog as an icon of Semarang City that starts change by some transformations. This research will reveal how the citizens of Semarang city understanding the symbolization of Warak Ngendog and the impacts given by the transformation. This research uses ethnograhic method with several research technique, which are direct observation, deep interview, and library research. The theory those are used in this research are structuration theory by Giddens and city branding theory by Keith Dinne. The paradigm that is used in this research is symbolic interpretivism by Clifford Geertz. Based from the result of this research, Semarang citizens interpret Warak Ngendog as an icon of the city in various activity and founding new fungtion as branding media, as a dakwa media, and as an income source due to its influence in creative industry. The factors that cause different interpretations such as education factors and freedom of expression by city government. In addition, Warak Ngendog’s transformation also brings up positive impact by increasing the people’s economy and also Warak Ngendog is more recognied in the society. In the other hand, negative impacts are emerged as debate among government and cultural arts activists and reduction in sense of belonging among citizens toward Warak Ngendog due to the transformation that occured.
