Abstract

The dissemination of political hoax in Indonesia through social media is seen to cause a variety of national problems, among others: divisions, political instability, and security disruptions that potentially hamper national development tend to Raises cognitive dissonance and change the emotional atmosphere. Also, the hoax information that the individuals have to cultivate is a bias against other individuals expressed through variations in commentary or individual actions, although the factual element of the information still needs to be known. In the perspective of social psychology, prejudice is a negative attitude toward a particular group or in person, because of its membership in a particular group (Sarwono, 2002:267). The study uses an interpretive genre, phenomenological traditions, to understand individual experiences in spreading Hoax information through social media. The perspective of Computer-Mediated Communication Theory is used to describe the activities of communication networks between individuals who have been disseminated by the computer and Gatekeeping Theory to explain how individuals do Various ways of evaluating and deciding which hoax information will be disseminated through social media. Besides, the study also sought to discover the meaning of hoax information understood by individuals using digital media literacy theory. The results of this study show that individuals generally disseminate hoax information using Facebook. The physical form of hoax information deployed is a photo with a provocative caption. The spread of Hoax information was deliberately done for political campaigns. Individuals are aware that the information disseminated is a hoax. New media literacy capabilities of the hoax information dissemination in this study are very low. The causal factor is a lack of knowledge about media literacy and hoax information, not critical when dealing with media messages, the level of information needs, and the lack of social responsibility in interacting.
