Abstract

News about the complishment of Weam Al Dakheel as a Saudi Arabian female news anchor became a phenomenon that suggest a lot of attention from various media in the world. CNN Indonesia in the World Now program broadcasts the same news and uploads the piece of news to CNN Youtube. However, this news of achievement gets comments with tones of rejection from YouTube users. This study aims to look at how CNN Indonesia constructs the news and looks at what discourse appears in the CNN Youtube user comments column. This study also aims to provide an explanation of how the discourse was raised and see how the discourse is a means of doctrination and potentially rejects the existence of equal rights for women. This research is a qualitative research that uses a critical perspective. The method used in this research is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis method. The results of this study conclude that there are different discourses between text producers and text consumers. The knowledge of each individual becomes the background of understanding the phenomenon. Text producer discourse is the dominant discourse in society. Text consumer discourse is an indication of the rejection of gender equality which is considered as the influence of western culture. It was concluded that there was a debate and negotiation between western ideology (modernity) and the ideology of Conservative Islamic groups mediated by technological advancements (social media). The use of the terms 'west' and 'Islam' does not refer to specific countries but a point of view that is where western ideology demands a state of liberalism and modernity, while on the other hand Conservative Islamic ideology sees the west as a destroyer and feels the need to struggle to restore the purity of Islamic teachings in life daily. The results of this study provide the development of the application of standpoint theory. Women are not only a group that is discriminated against from capitalist and patriarchal ideology, but the existence of a war of western ideology and Conservative Islam also positions women as a disadvantaged group.
