Abstract

The use of social media as a means to share personal things by married couples regarding their marital life is a phenomenon that has caught the attention of researcher. Instead of discussing privately the problems or other private matters that occur in marriage in face to face communication, they use Instagram which seems to ignore privacy in the digital realm. The purpose of this study is to understand the public and personal boundaries regarding marital relations in social media, especially Instagram through the logic of truth that belongs to the perpetrators. Through the chosen phenomenological approach, researcher conducted in-depth interview to 4 selected informants in order to gain an understanding of their experiences using the theoretical framework of Communication Privacy Management and Privacy Boundary Constraints. For the subject, the reason to open the marriage problem on social media is considered as a correct one because of the background of difficulties in communicating directly with his partner because of interpersonal communication. Social media then becomes a means / facilitator to express feelings. The subjects felt that opening up privacy in the public (social media Instagram) for a specific purpose can meet the needs of emotional release (emotional release) like one of the functions of privacy itself. Because of this, public and private boundaries in research informants are flexible. Emotional factors and interpersonal communication appear to influence this shift in their privacy boundary. The digital age creates a shift in the way of interpersonal communication from face to face communication to mediated by computers (computer mediated communitacion). Online privacy literacy is needed to maintain personal privacy and also protect the privacy of others who are in the relationship.
