Abstract

ABSTRACT Puspitasari, Nia. 2019. “~You To Omou, ~Tsumori and~Yotei Modality in Japanese Sentence”. Undergraduate Thesis, Japanese Language and Culture Department, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University. Advisor: Lina Rosliana, S.S., M.Hum. In this thesis, the writer discussed about “~You To Omou, ~Tsumori and~Yotei Modality in Japanese Sentence”. The purpose of the research is to describe structure and meaning of you to omou, tsumori, and yotei modality in Japanese sentence. The writer obtained data from Japanese website, such as ejje.weblio.jp, asahi.com, aozora.gr.jp, and ameblo.jp. Data collected by using observation method and notetaking technique. Furthermore, data were analyzed by using distributional method with immediate constituent analysis technique. Meanwhile, the writer used informal method to present analysis result. According to data analysis, it can be concluded that ~you to omou, ~tsumori, and ~yotei modality had the same purpose, which was to state a meaning, intention, or plan. ~You to omou modality was less likely to happen because the speaker had no intention to realize his will and the statement was spontaneously made. Next, ~tsumori modality had medium possibility of happening because it shows speaker’s willingness and the decision had been made long before. Lastly, ~yotei modality had the highest possibility because it shows ascertained plan, not mere intention nor desire. Keywords:modality, ~you to omou, ~tsumori, ~yotei
