Abstract

Medication non-adherence is one of the biggest problems to achieve successful management in patients with schizophrenia. Attitude toward medication is a supporting factor that influence treatment adherence in schizophrenic patients. Patients who have a positive attitude to take medication will be more adherence to undergo treatment and closer to recovery. Attitude can be influenced by self-efficacy. Individuals with high self-efficacy towards an object, then attitudes toward the object will increase as well. This study aimed to determine the relationship of self-efficacy to recover and the attitude of taking medication in schizophrenia patients. Type of this study was quantitative with descriptive correlational method and cross sectional approach. The instruments used were Belief of Recover from Illness Questionnaire and Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10). This research was conducted in 8 inpatient wards of Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Psychiatric Hospital and involved 66 schizophrenic inpatients as respondents recruited using convenience sampling technique. The results showed that most of the patients had high self-efficacy for recovery (90.9%) and positive attitude toward taking medication (80.3%). Pearson's correlation coefficient test results obtained p-value 0.272 (p> 0.1) showed there was no relationship between self-efficacy to recover and the attitude of taking medication in schizophrenic patients. Some aspects related with self-efficacy to recover and the attitude of taking medication in schizophrenia patients who were not included in this study could be the cause of the lack of association in this study. The results of this study are expected to be used as additional information to provide appropriate interventions for schizophrenic patients. Keywords : Self-efficacy to recover, Attitude towards taking medication, Schizophrenia, Schizophrenia inpatients
