HUBUNGAN SELF COMPASSION DENGAN TINGKAT DEPRESI LANSIA DI PANTI WILAYAH KENDAL

Abstract

Background: The aging process in the elderly decreases the physical ability to take out independent activities. Changing conditions cause the elderly defenseless to depression, especially who live in nursing homes. Theory of self-compassion may be beneficial to the elderly in improving coping ability and adaptation to stressful situations that practice how to defend, understand, and realize the meaning of suffering as a positive thing. Aim: This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-compassion and depression level among the elderly who lives in nursing homes in Kendal. Method: This quantitative study conducted with a survey to evaluate the correlation of the variabels, with the number of subjects was 56 elderly in nursing homes in Kendal. The data were collected with The Self-compassion Scale and The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Result: The results from the univariate analysis showed thatan equal proportion of the elderly was experiencing depression (55,4%) and having low self-compassion (60,7%). While Chi-Square analysis showed that there is no significant relationship between self-compassion and depression among the elderly who lives in nursing homes p-value = 0,517 (p >0,05) and x2 = 0,421. Conclusion: It can be concluded that self-compassion has no significant correlation with depression in the elderly. Keywords: Self-compassiom, depression, elderly
