Abstract

Reps ID as a fitness media produces and reproduces knowledge about fitness discourse with the mechanism of the text that targets urban middle-class women and men as a discourse community. Reps ID naturalizes the ideology of gender that can be accepted by the wider community as a truth with biopower. This becomes very crucial, because if the media represent concepts in body discipline based on gender with the wrong viewpoint in the text, then this can distort people's perceptions of the body - such as body image - which results in bodily dissatisfaction, which then results in various unhealthy behaviors. This study aims to look at the disciplinary mechanism of the body through male and female fitness discourse on Reps ID, one of Indonesia big fitness and bodybuilding site. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with a critical paradigm. This research was conducted at the text level, in order to see how a mechanism works in text constructed by the media. The analysis was carried out with a two-stage Foucault discourse analysis or Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA), archeology and genealogy. Archeology serves to find the mechanism used by Reps ID through its text in producing a discourse on body discipline for men and women. While genealogy functions to see power relations and their relation to the theory of biopower from Foucault. Archaeological stages in this study can reveal several things about the mechanism of the text; the body's disciplinary mechanism is produced in the text through the concept of self-surveillance on the subject of eating, training and controlling of body weight. Women are more likely to be presented with fear-mongering techniques, whereas men give more affirmations in the form of hope and optimism about the body. The text also emphasizes different fitness goals in the body; sex appeal and domestic roles for women, as well as masculinity and roles in public spaces for men. Genealogy helps to see the presence of oppression in the female body in the terms of objectification of the body, emphasis on the role of domestic space, and the existence of exclusion on strong and muscular bodies. Through the power of biopower that sided with the dominance of men, there was a fear of women's physical masculinity. This is naturalized by Reps ID through prescription exercises, persuasive or fear-mongering texts, and body image displayed by the media. However, both men and women have lost authority on their body which should be private and personal for every individuals, because it has been subjugated by power of media text mechanism.
