Abstract

ABSTRACT Cahyadi, Agung. 2019. “Social criticism in the film Battle Royale I by Koushun Takami”. A thesis of Japanese literature, Diponegoro University, Semarang. The First Advisor Fajria Noviana, S.S., M.Hum, The Second Advisor Dewi Saraswati Sakariah, S.S., M.Si. The object of this research is the film Battle Royale I by Koushun Takami. The purpose of this research is to describe the narrative structure of film and social criticism in the film of Battle Royale I. This research tries to prove that Battle Royale I has a social criticism. This research used literature method, was in the form of books and written materials. The theories used to analyzed is the theory of the Pratista’s narrative structure to explain the narrative elements in the film. The sociological approach to literature uses the theory of Wellek and Warren to explain what is implied in literature. And Yasa's theory of social criticism to find the inadequacies in the film and relate them to the facts of Japanese history. Based on the results of the analysis, several social criticisms have been found in the film of Battle Royale I, which include criticism of the dictatorial government, criticism of misuse of the law for the benefit of the government, criticism of security forces' actions that exceed the limits, critics of technological abuse, and criticism of education. Keywords : narrative structure, literary sociology, social criticism.
