GAMBARAN KOMPETENSI PERAWATDALAM PENANGANAN PENYAKIT GENETIK

Abstract

Nurses have competencies (knowledges, skills, attitudes) about management of genetic disease. The competencies of nurses about management of genetic disease is facilitate the genetic counseling process. In overseas countries, some studies have shown that competencies of nurses about management of genetic disease in low category. The aims of the research were to describe the competencies (knowledge, skill and attitude) of nurses about management of genetic diseases in one of hospital at Semarang City, Indonesia. This study used quantitative method with descriptive survey design. The sampling technique used in this study was proportional random sampling technique. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire that adopted and adapted from “GPGeneQ Questionnaire” developed by Flouris. This questionnaire was distributed to 76 nurses in one of the hospital at Semarang City. The results showed that 39 (51,3 %) nurses have low competencies, 47 (61,8%) nurses have low knowledge, 42 (55,3%) registered nurses have high skills and 53 (69,7%) nurses have high attitude about management of genetic disease. In conclusion, majority of nurses have low competencies about management of genetic disease. To improve the competencies of nurses about management of genetic diseases, the need to determine nurse’s competencies standards about management of genetic disease in Indonesia, incorporate genetic studies into the curriculum of nursing schools and providing training and seminars about genetic to nurses in hospital.
