Abstract

Master Program in Nursing Adult Nursing Concentration Department of Nursing Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University July, 2019 ABSTRACT Maksum Effects of Natural Restorative Environment and Therapeutic Touch on Anxiety in Patients with Chronic Kidneys Diseases Undergoing Hemodialysis xvii + 100 pages + 9 tables + 8 figures + 17 appendixes Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition in which the kidneys do not function properly or sufficiently, causing an accumulation of metabolic remnants. Hemodialysis therapy causes a common psychological disorder, namely anxiety, due to changes in health status, self-acceptance, life threats, stress, and depression. Natural restorative environment (NRE) and therapeutic touch are such interventions which could be used to deal with anxiety in patients. This study aimed to analyze the effects of NRE and therapeutic touch on anxiety in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. This study employed a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with a control group. The samples were 48 patients each in the intervention group, and the control group recruited using a consecutive sampling technique. NRE and therapeutic touch were given to the intervention group twice a week, while the control group was given the hospital standard interventions. Before and after the intervention, a pre-test and post-test about the level of anxiety during hemodialysis therapy were given to the patients in both groups. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test, Wilcoxon-test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. The results showed a decreased level of anxiety in the intervention group with a p-value <0.001. NRE and therapeutic touch could reduce the level of anxiety in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis.
