Abstract
Wardani, Ayu W. 2019. “PERUT NAGA DI TANAH PAPUA: A Social Criticism of the Papuan people in the novel The Secret of Carstensz by Marino Gustomo and Zaynur Ridwan”. A thesis for S-1 Degree. Faculty of Humanities. Diponegoro University, Semarang. The first supervisor is Prof. Dr. Mudjahirin Thohir, M. A. and the second supervisor is Laura Andri R.M., S.S., M.Hum. In this study, the writer wants to analyze a novel entitled The Secret of Carstensz written by Marino Gustomo and Zaynur Ridwan as the co-writer. The novel was published in 2017 by Salsabila Publishing in Jakarta Timur. This study uses a qualitative method based on structural theory and the social criticism theory. This study aims to analyze the intrinsic elements which are themes, characters and characterizations, plots, and settings. Besides, the writer also uses the fiction structural theory, the sociology of literature approach, and social criticism. The results of this study are the social criticism of the Papuan discrimination and social criticism to the power of the rulers in the novel The Secret of Carstensz. Characters in the novel The Secret of Carstensz are one main character, four additional main characters, and twelve supporting characters. The plot in the novel The Secret of Carstensz is mixed plot which is progressive following the sequence of events in the novel. Meanwhile, the settings in this novel are the setting of time, the setting of places, and the setting of social. Based on the result of analysis, this study gained the source the primary data that is the novel The Secret of Carstensz and the secondary data that is the references used by the writer to strengthen the data analysis. In this study, the writer found that in this study, there is a criticism of the discrimination in Papua and a criticism aimed at the rulers who want to won the natural wealth of the Papua land, and a criticism of the government who has not been able to provide justice to the Papuans, even though the Papua land provides a very large contribution to the development of nation.
