Abstract

Herdiyanti, Nia. 2019. The Symbolic Meaning of the Palintangan Text: Text redaction and Semiotic Analysis. Thesis (S1) Indonesian Literature Departement. Faculty of Humanities Diponegoro University Semarang. Palintangan is archaic manuscript that is written in Javanese script and in Javanese letter and Kawi language. Palintangan is one of National Library of the Republic of Indonesia collection’s encoded KBG 249. This study is aimed to investigate the meaning of the text so that the readers can understand the script well. The writer use philological analysis which are translation, transliteration, and text redaction. Gods, animals, stars and lake water are used as symbols in Palintangan text. Therefore, this study uses Charles Sanders Pierce’s semiotic theory to determine the meaning of symbols in the Palintangan text. In the Palintangan text, there are many symbols are used to discribe one's character and fate based on the day of their birth. The meaning exploration of Palintangan text helps the reader to understand the essensial meaning of Palintangan text. The writer uses library research methods and field studies in conducting this research. The results of the study shows that the use of the name of Gods, animals, stars and lake water symbolizes good and bad characters. The use of those names in the Palintangan text is due to meaning relations between the symbol and what it symbolizes. And some of those symbols are still used in Hindu’s calender.
