Abstract

The incidence of breast cancer is increasing globally and becomes a health issue in the community. Early detection of breast cancer is the key to early diagnosis and increases the chances of successful treatment. Breast cancer cases in developing countries are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which might be due to a low level of self-awareness about early signs of symptoms and screening methods among women. Increased knowledge about breast cancer can develop more self-awareness in women to undergo early detection of breast cancer. This study aimed to determine the relationship between reproductive age women’s knowledge about breast cancer and self-awareness for early detection of breast cancer. This study was quantitative research with a descriptive correlational design. The instruments used were the Women’s Breast Cancer Knowledge Questionnaire (WBCKQ) and Breast Cancer Inventory (BCI). This study was conducted in Kramas Sub-District, Tembalang Sub-district, Semarang, and involved 287 respondents recruited using a consecutive sampling technique. The results showed that 56.1% of respondents had good knowledge of breast cancer, and 70% had high self-awareness for early detection of breast cancer. The Chi-square correlational test obtained p-value = 0.005 (p≤0.05), indicating that there was a significant relationship between knowledge of breast cancer and self-awareness for early detection of breast cancer. Women need to increase their knowledge and develop self-awareness of breast cancer to form positive attitudes and behaviors towards the early detection of breast cancer.
