The Correlation Between Sense of Humor and Occupational Stress of Nurses in Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit xvi + 59 Pages+ 10 Tables + 2 Pictures + 13 Attachments ABSTRACT Job stress is a disproportionate response between the responsibilities and abilities of employees at work setting place and time. The Ministry of Health in Indonesia recorded 237,181 Indonesian nurses under conditions of work stress. Stress could increase the cortisol hormones, which is known as stress hormones. Cortisol might be lower the immune system and it impacted to the health condition. Previous studies found that humor can provide psychological wellness as well as stress coping for adults. Laughs from humor could decrease the cortisol that might be increasing the immune system. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sense of humor and job stress on nurses in the emergency room and ICU. This study used a correlational quantitative method with a Spearman Correlation Rank test on 40 nurses and a value of α = 0.05. Data was taken using MSHS and ENSS questionnaires with the result r = - 0.368 and ρ 0.019 (<0.05). The result of this study indicated there was a significant negative relationship between the sense of humor and work stress of nurses in the emergency department and ICU. Nurses with a higher sense of humor might be more adaptive to job stressors than lower ones. Researcher suggested the hopital managament to pay attention to the job stress on nurse and provided evaluation of job stress once in 6 months. Keywords : sense of humor, job stress, nurse Bibliography : 40 (2008-2018)
