Abstract

Generation Y is the largest generation that will enter the workforce. In Indonesia the number of Generation Y employees has reached 35% or around 48 million from 128 million of productive workforce. However, Generation Y employees are considered to have a low work ethic and organizational commitment, resulting in various problems in the company. This study aims to examine the efforts used by the company to retain Generation Y employees and to investigate factors that motivate Generation Y employees. This study uses qualitative methods with phenomenological study. The study participants consisted of five managers and five Generation Y employees which worked in non-financial companies in Indonesia. Another result of this study also demonstrate that the social environment is the most influencing factor among various things that can motivate Generation Y Employees.
