Abstract

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that commonly occurs in women. The management of breast cancer can be performed by mastectomy, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Such management may have an impact on the physical, physiological, psychological, and social aspects of patients, which may result in sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction can cause a decrease in the frequency of sexual intercourse, sexual satisfaction as well as quality of life. Furthermore, sexual dysfunction may interfere with marriage, causing infidelity and increasing divorce rates. This study aimed to describe the sexual function of breast cancer patients with post mastectomy in Semarang. This study employed a descriptive survey research design. The samples were 96 patients recruited using a total sampling technique. The data were collected using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire. The results showed that 74.0% of respondents experienced sexual dysfunction. Nearly half of the respondents (44,8%) rarely had sexual interest/desire and more than a quarter (26%) of whom were not engaged in sexual activity at all after the mastectomy. The results of this study could be used as a basis for nurses and health workers to pay more attention to the factors affecting sexual function and their implications for sexual life, physical and psychological health. Nurses and health workers can provide interventions in the form of hypnotherapy and endorphin massage to maintain sexual function and provide emotional support to breast cancer patients with post-mastectomy to improve their positive mindset by getting closer to God and increasing their faith.
