Department of Nursing Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University Juny, 2019 Istriyani Adaptation of PatientsColorectal Cancer in First Year After Permanent Colostomy Creation ABSTRACT xv + 81 Pages + 2 Tables + 7 Pictures + 15 Attachments First-year colorectal cancer patients after the creation of a permanent colostomy experience various changes in their lives, resulting in adaptive responses and adaptive malls. Adaptive response improves the quality of life of patients so that they can achieve optimal health status. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the adaptation of first-year colorectal cancer patients after making a permanent colostomy. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were obtained by in-depth interviews with 7 participants. Analysis of the results used the Colaizzi method. The results of the study found 4 themes, namely adaptation of physical function, adaptation of self-concept, adaptation of role functions, and interdependent adaptation after the creation of a permanent colostomy. Adaptation of participants' physical functions by avoiding activities that aggravate physical symptoms, after experiencing changes in physical conditions and changes in physical activity. Adaptation of self-concept to participants begins to accept themselves after going through the stages of grief and loss over time. Adaptation of role functions, the role of participants as breadwinners is replaced by the family and the response limits interaction in society. Interdependent adaptation of participants changes worship activities, searches for information regarding religious practices, increases faith and feels close to God. Each model of adaptation in the face of change varies, depending on the characteristics and experiences of the influencing participants. It needs a structured support and approach related to the management of colostomy care according to the needs of patients at the adaptation stage so that an adaptive change process is achieved.
