Gambaran Tingkat Pengetahuan Petugas Pemadam Kebakaran Kota Semarang tentang Bantuan Hidup Dasar (BHD)

Abstract

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a part of medical emergency management that aims to prevent the cessation of circulation, or respiration. Therefore, a fire department, as a people rescuer, must have a knowledge related to BLS to save lives of the victims immediately without waiting for any medical assistance to come first. Firefighters are those who have a responsibility to master first-aid skills in order to help fire victims. The general purpose of this study is to find out the description of the firefighters' BLS knowledge level for helping the fire victims. This quantitative descriptive research used survey as a method. 203 firefighters working in 8 fire stationsin Semarang were involved as the participants. The sample were recruited by using probability proportionate random sampling technique. Moreover, the research instrument used in this study was a questionnaire regarding to BLS. The results showed that 113 of the firefighters (55,7%) had a good BLS knowledge. They had best knowledge for a “shout for help” category with the mean of 0,946 and the worst knowledge for a “breathing”category with the mean of 0,536. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the firefighters should work together with health institutions so that their BLS knowledge can be improved. It can be done by organizing training for all firefighters member.
